Reports put liquidated long positions anywhere from $200 million to over $400 million within hours of the price break.
Bitcoin fell below the $80,000 mark, a level that has served as a psychological and technical anchor for traders in recent weeks. The drop came with unusual speed, catching leveraged long positions off guard and forcing automatic liquidations across major derivatives venues.
Accounts of the scale differ depending on the time window measured. BeInCrypto reported that roughly $200 million in leveraged positions unwound within a single hour as the price broke below $80,000. The Block, measuring over a longer four-hour window, put total long liquidations at $404 million. CoinTurk News cited a figure of $239 million in liquidated bitcoin longs specifically, alongside a separate report of $773 million in net outflows from spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds.
The differing numbers likely reflect differences in measurement windows, data providers, and whether figures cover bitcoin alone or the broader crypto derivatives market. Liquidation tracking across exchanges is not standardized, and totals can shift significantly depending on which venues and timeframes are included. Still, every account describes a rapid, forced unwind of leveraged bets that had been positioned for further upside.
Leveraged long liquidations occur when traders borrow against their bitcoin positions to amplify potential gains. When the price falls past a trader's margin threshold, exchanges automatically close the position to prevent further losses. A cascade of such liquidations can accelerate a price decline, as forced selling adds supply into an already falling market.
The reported ETF outflows add another layer to the picture. Spot bitcoin ETFs have become a major channel for institutional exposure to the asset since their approval. Large net redemptions, if confirmed at the scale CoinTurk described, would suggest that some institutional holders were also reducing exposure during the same window, rather than only retail leverage unwinding.
Market structure analysts often watch liquidation events like this one for signs of how overleveraged the derivatives market had become. A sharp, fast liquidation cascade typically signals that open interest in long positions had built up considerably before the drop, leaving the market vulnerable to a swift reversal once selling pressure emerged.
Bitcoin's move below $80,000 also matters for broader crypto market sentiment, given the asset's role as a benchmark for the sector. Sharp downside moves in bitcoin frequently coincide with declines across altcoins, as traders reduce risk exposure broadly rather than in a single asset.
Market Impact
A liquidation event of this nature tends to increase short-term volatility across crypto markets, as forced selling pressures spot prices beyond what fundamental demand or supply shifts alone would produce. Traders and exchanges will likely watch funding rates and open interest in the coming days for signs of whether leverage has meaningfully reset or whether positioning remains elevated.
If the reported ETF outflows are confirmed and sustained, that could signal a broader pullback in institutional demand, a factor that has been closely tied to bitcoin's price performance throughout the year. Continued outflows alongside deleveraging in derivatives markets would suggest reduced near-term buying pressure from multiple investor categories simultaneously.
The exact scale of Thursday's liquidation event remains uncertain given the differing figures across reports, but the underlying pattern is consistent: a fast, forced unwind of leveraged bitcoin longs below $80,000. Traders will be watching whether the market stabilizes or whether further deleveraging follows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do the liquidation figures differ between reports?
Outlets measured different time windows and may have used different data sources or exchange coverage. BeInCrypto measured a one-hour window at roughly $200 million, while The Block tracked a four-hour window at $404 million, and CoinTurk cited $239 million specifically for bitcoin longs.
What does it mean when leveraged long positions are liquidated?
Liquidation happens when a trader's borrowed position falls below the required margin, prompting an exchange to automatically close it. This forced selling can add to downward price pressure during a market decline.
Are the ETF outflows connected to the liquidation event?
CoinTurk reported $773 million in spot bitcoin ETF outflows alongside the liquidation figures, suggesting the two may be related, though the exact relationship between institutional redemptions and derivatives liquidations was not specified.
Has bitcoin fully recovered from this drop below $80,000?
The available reports describe the price briefly slipping below $80,000 during the liquidation event, but do not provide confirmed details on subsequent price recovery.
