President Lee Jae-myung said on the 12th that "the way officers are trained must change as much as the battlefield has changed," stressing the need to merge the army, navy and air force academies.
Lee made the remarks on his X account, formerly Twitter, where he shared a post by Defense Ministry spokesperson Jung Bit-na introducing cases of integrated military academies operated in countries around the world.
"Drones are changing the shape of the battlefield — which service would you say they belong to, the army, the navy or the air force?" Lee said. "Drones, lasers and robots are already crossing the boundaries between the army, navy and air force."
"The way officers are trained must change as much as the battlefield has changed. The core of merging the academies lies in cultivating the talent that will lead future warfare," he said. "The government will build a national armed forces academy in the form best suited to South Korea's security environment."
