Apple’s most memory-packed Mac Studio is still waiting for its turn in the spotlight, but that wait could soon be over.
According to Apple’s Aug. 25 announcement, a version of its M5 Ultra Mac Studio with 512GB of unified memory is scheduled to arrive in late October 2026, following the release of other configurations in September. The upgrade targets professionals running demanding workloads, including artificial intelligence models, complex video projects, and large datasets.
The upcoming release gives developers, creative professionals, and IT teams another high-end desktop option to consider. However, Apple has not confirmed the final price of the 512GB configuration or an exact ordering date.
Apple’s 512GB Mac Studio is approaching its release window
Apple announced the 512GB configuration alongside its broader Mac Studio refresh in August and reiterated the late-October timeline in its Sept. 22 release announcement.
The M5 Ultra Mac Studio launched in September with lower-memory configurations, but buyers seeking the full 512GB option have had to wait.
The distinction matters because unified memory is shared across the Mac’s CPU, GPU, and other processing components. Rather than relying on separate pools of system and graphics memory, Apple’s architecture allows supported workloads to access a common memory pool.
For certain professional applications, particularly large AI models and memory-intensive creative projects, that capacity can be more important than simply adding processing power.
Other M5 Ultra Mac Studio configurations became available Sept. 22, but Apple scheduled the 512GB memory option for late October. The company has not confirmed an exact ordering date or delivery estimates.
Apple’s M5 Ultra Mac Studio starts at $5,499, but the company has not yet announced the final U.S. price of the 512GB configuration.
The upcoming release also builds on the hardware differences outlined in TechRepublic’s Mac Studio M5 Max vs. M5 Ultra comparison, which examined whether the higher-end chip justifies its additional cost.
What buyers should know before Apple’s 512GB Mac Studio arrives
The 512GB configuration could be particularly relevant to developers and organizations experimenting with large AI models on local hardware.
Running AI workloads locally can give teams greater control over where data is processed and reduce their dependence on cloud-based inference services. However, the practical benefits depend on model size, software compatibility, performance requirements, and hardware costs.
Recent work by Apple and Meta illustrates that potential. In an Oct. 15 research announcement, Apple detailed how its MLX framework enables distributed AI inference across multiple Mac Studios, including the ability to run Meta’s Muse Spark Open model.
In a separate announcement the same day, Meta confirmed that Muse Spark Open contains 816 billion total parameters, with 42 billion active parameters, and supports a context window of approximately one million tokens.
According to Meta’s technical documentation, a supported MLX deployment can run the model on two M5 Ultra Mac Studios, each with 512GB of unified memory, or on four machines, each with 256GB of unified memory.
The systems use Apple’s MLX framework and RDMA over Thunderbolt 5 to distribute the workload. Meta specifies that this setup requires macOS 26.2 or later, MLX 0.30.1 or later, and direct Thunderbolt 5 connections between every pair of Macs.
Rather than transferring the entire model between computers, MLX distributes the model’s weights across the connected systems. Each Mac loads its portion into memory, while the machines exchange smaller intermediate results over Thunderbolt 5 during inference.
Apple’s research explains why multiple machines are necessary for this workload. Muse Spark Open requires more than 1.6TB of memory for its model parameters at native precision. In Apple’s tests, NVFP4 4-bit quantization reduced the model’s memory footprint to approximately 493GB.
Meta separately lists approximately 537GB for the NVFP4 checkpoint’s weights in its model documentation. The sources do not explain the difference between those measurements. Both figures underscore why a single 512GB Mac Studio lacks sufficient memory for the complete inference workload.
Beyond the model’s weights, inference requires additional working memory for operations such as processing inputs and generating responses. That additional overhead prevents the full workload from fitting within the unified memory of a single 512GB Mac Studio.
This illustrates both the potential and the limitations of Apple’s highest-memory desktop configuration. While 512GB can accommodate unusually demanding workloads, some of the largest AI models still require multiple systems working together.
For buyers considering the upcoming configuration, several questions deserve attention:
- Memory requirements: Workloads that fit comfortably within lower-memory configurations may see little benefit from upgrading to 512GB.
- Total cost: Organizations should compare the cost of high-memory Mac Studio hardware with cloud-based alternatives, particularly if their workloads run only occasionally.
- Software compatibility: Developers should confirm that their preferred AI frameworks and professional applications can leverage the available memory and processing resources.
Those evaluating the broader Mac Studio lineup can also consult TechRepublic’s Mac Studio cheat sheet for an overview of the desktop’s features and specifications.
For most everyday computing tasks, 512GB of unified memory would be excessive. The configuration is more relevant to specialized users whose applications consume unusually large amounts of memory or who want to consolidate demanding workloads onto local systems.
For IT teams considering a purchase, the most important step is determining whether existing workloads actually require that much memory. Benchmarking representative applications on available hardware, checking software support, and comparing local operating costs with those of cloud services can help determine whether the upgrade is justified.
Once Apple confirms pricing and ordering availability, buyers will have the remaining information needed to make that decision.
