Argentina’s central bank has an answer for anyone hoping to buy crypto through their bank app this year. The answer is no.
On October 7, 2026, Juan Curutchet, Superintendent of Financial and Foreign Exchange Institutions at the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA), said there would be no progress this year on bringing digital assets into the country’s banking and payment channels. Commercial banks remain barred from offering crypto services.
What the BCRA actually said
Curutchet pointed to one main reason for the pause: Argentina’s economic fragility. In his view, the financial system isn’t in shape to absorb a new asset class through regulated channels right now.
He did leave a door slightly open. Curutchet indicated that crypto integration could be reconsidered during a potential second presidency of Javier Milei, provided economic conditions improve.
Curutchet also addressed chatter that restrictions were about to loosen. He clarified that the BCRA has no near-term plans to change its stance on crypto integration, whatever the rumors suggested.
The practical effect is that the status quo holds. The ban the BCRA imposed in May 2022 on commercial banks and payment service providers offering crypto-related services stays in force.
A big market operating outside the banks
The awkward part for regulators is that Argentines are not waiting for permission. The country recorded more than $88.5 billion in digital asset transaction volume for the year ending June 30, 2026. That figure ranks Argentina second in Latin America.
A majority of digital asset transactions in Argentina involve stablecoins, which are tokens designed to hold a steady value, typically pegged to a currency like the US dollar. People are using them primarily as a hedge against inflation.
Banks are building anyway
Some Argentine financial groups have not taken the ban as the final word. Banking groups, including Grupo Bind and Grupo Petersen, are pursuing independent stablecoin projects despite the BCRA’s restrictions.
Background: how Argentina got here
The current rules date to May 2022, when the BCRA prohibited commercial banks and payment service providers from offering crypto-related services. That decision effectively walled off the formal financial system from the digital asset market. The prohibition was later expanded to certain payment service providers.
What this means
For traders and investors, the ban continuing means regulated channels stay closed. The research behind this report suggests the prohibition may keep pushing participants toward decentralized exchanges and peer-to-peer platforms.
For the banks themselves, the stablecoin projects from groups like Grupo Bind and Grupo Petersen are the thing to watch. They signal that financial institutions see real demand and want a foothold, even if regulators are not ready to let them serve customers directly.
Curutchet tied any reconsideration to a potential second Milei term and improved conditions, so election outcomes and inflation trends will matter more for Argentina’s crypto rules than any single industry announcement. Until then, the 2022 ban holds, and Argentina’s large stablecoin market will keep operating largely outside the formal banking system.
