The United Nations General Assembly elected 15 countries, including Kuwait, to the UN Human Rights Council on Tuesday for three-year terms starting January 1, 2027.
Kuwait secured 173 votes in the secret ballot under the Asia-Pacific Group, while Jordan received 171 votes. Other countries elected included Nepal, Ukraine, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Brazil and Germany.
Kuwait’s election marks its second consecutive term on the council. Its current term ends on December 31, with the new term running from January 1, 2027, through the end of 2029.
The council comprises 47 member states elected directly by the General Assembly through a secret ballot, based on equitable geographical distribution. Members serve three-year terms and are not eligible for immediate re-election after serving two consecutive terms.
The seats are allocated among regional groups as follows: 13 for African states, 13 for Asia-Pacific states, six for Eastern European states, eight for Latin American and Caribbean states, and seven for Western European and other states.
