5 tips to keep in mind when finding love on social media

Social media has made it easier to connect with people beyond our immediate circles. From Facebook and Instagram to TikTok and dating apps, people are meeting potential partners online and building relationships that sometimes develop into long-term commitments.

However, finding love online also comes with challenges. A person’s profile may reveal only a carefully selected version of their life, and it can take time to establish whether someone is genuine about their intentions.

If you are hoping to find love on social media, here are five things to keep in mind.

Take time to know the person

It can be exciting to meet someone online who shares your interests and seems to understand you. However, avoid rushing into a relationship simply because your conversations are enjoyable.

Take time to learn about the person’s values, lifestyle, expectations and relationship goals. Pay attention to whether their words and actions remain consistent over time.

Remember that frequent messaging and long conversations do not automatically mean you know someone well.

Verify who you are talking to

Not everyone online is who they claim to be. Some people use fake profiles, stolen photographs or misleading personal information to gain another person’s trust.

Before becoming deeply invested, consider having a live video call and checking whether the details they share are consistent. Be cautious if someone repeatedly avoids video calls, makes excuses about their identity or becomes defensive when you ask reasonable questions.

Even a video call cannot guarantee that someone is trustworthy, so continue to exercise good judgement.

Romance scams often begin with affectionate messages and promises of a future together. After gaining a person's trust, the scammer may invent an emergency, request money for travel or medical expenses, or introduce a supposedly profitable investment opportunity.

Be particularly cautious if someone you have never met in person asks for money, gift cards, cryptocurrency or financial assistance.

No matter how convincing their story sounds, avoid sending money or sharing your banking details. If you suspect a scam, stop communicating and report the account through the platform.

Be clear about what you want [VerywellMind]

People use social media for different reasons. While you may be looking for a serious relationship, the person you are talking to may want friendship, casual dating or simply attention.

It is better to discuss your intentions early rather than assume you both want the same thing.

Ask respectful questions about what the other person is looking for and be honest about your own expectations. If your goals are different, acknowledge that instead of trying to persuade the other person to want what you want.

Avoid sharing sensitive information such as your home address, passwords, financial details or intimate photographs with someone you have only recently met online.

If you decide to meet in person, choose a public place, arrange your own transport and tell a trusted friend where you are going. Consider sharing the person's profile or contact details with someone you trust.

Do not feel pressured to meet before you are ready, and leave if the person makes you feel uncomfortable or ignores your boundaries.

Finding love online can lead to meaningful relationships, but trust should develop over time. Enjoy getting to know someone, maintain your boundaries and pay attention to warning signs rather than allowing excitement to override your judgement.
