Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman expressed relief and delight after ending his goal drought to seal Atletico Madrid’s 2–0 win over Manchester United in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night at the Metropolitano.
The Nigerian winger sealed the win in the 79th minute, scoring eight minutes after coming off the bench to help Diego Simeone’s side secure their first victory in the competition this season.
The 28-year-old former Atalanta forward replaced Álex Baena in the 71st minute and immediately made an impact. Manchester United defender Leny Yoro was sent off for a foul on Jonathan David after a VAR review, leaving the visitors with 10 men.
Speaking in a post-match conference, the Nigerian international praised his teammates for their collective effort and said he was pleased to contribute after entering the game as a substitute.
“I’m very happy to come on and help the team; it’s important. The guys put in a big shift before I came on, which made it easier to slot in and play, so I’m really pleased with the collective effort,” Lookman said.
He added that the victory would boost Atlético’s confidence ahead of their next fixture against Espanyol.
Lookman also revealed the instructions he received from Simeone before entering the game, saying the coach asked him to bring energy to both the attacking and defensive phases.
“Simeone told me to just bring the energy, try and help the team defensively and offensively,” he said.
The goal was Lookman’s first in the Champions League this season and ended a difficult spell in front of goal. His contribution also helped Atlético strengthen their position in the league phase.
