October the 17th, 2026 – Strange light and dark rings have appeared along the northern coast of Palagruža, resulting in all kinds of suspicions from those who saw them…
Unusual light and dark rings have appeared on the surface of the sea, arranged in almost regular oval circles that stretch in large arcs and are clearly visible from a great distance. Morski reports that this phenomenon has aroused the curiosity of autumn visitors to Palagruža who wondered what exactly was going on. Dalmacija danas sought the answer from the people who spend the most time on Palagruža and know the peculiarities of the local sea well, the lighthouse keepers.
They explained to them that this is a natural phenomenon connected with sea currents, which occasionally meet in that area and, as they picturesquely described it, “break”. The sea currents interact with each other, create vortex movements and areas of different current speeds.
In certain places where surface waters approach or diverge, zones of different roughness of the sea surface can form. Under certain lighting these are seen as lighter or darker stripes, arcs and other shapes, which explains the interesting “mystery” from Palagruža that nobody would be ridiculed for thinking aliens were coming!
