LeBron James may be an ageless wonder, but at 41 years of age, he is most certainly well-aware of his basketball mortality. This explains his decision to join the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency as a last-ditch effort to contend for a title — joining a stacked cast involving Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and offseason trade acquisition Jaylen Brown.
On Tuesday night, James made his official debut for the 76ers, suiting up in their starting five for their season opener against the reigning champion New York Knicks. The NBA’s all-time leading scorer isn’t expected to command the ball too often for Philly considering the talent he has to share the court with, but he can still make his presence felt with some bully ball.
This is exactly what he did for his first official bucket as a member of the 76ers. With around three minutes remaining in the first quarter, James imposed his well after seeing Landry Shamet defend him near the basket. James sealed Shamet underneath the basket, and he received a pinpoint pass from Joel Embiid, leading to two easy points.

This is more in line with the kind of buckets James is expected to get with the 76ers. Philly doesn’t need him to create much for himself, and with the considerable defensive attention that their other players command on their own, James is going to find himself with plenty of opportunities to exploit mismatches.
Nonetheless, James is on track to play his lowest-usage role yet, being more of a floor general and field commander instead of a focal point in the 76ers’ offense. And at this stage of his career, this looks like the perfect role for him.
Last season, James averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists per game. Those averages might drop even further on this stacked 76ers squad. But his two-way impact should remain mostly the same, and his leadership should be invaluable as this new-look team figures out how to play with each other.
