The Wisconsin Badgers struggled to find its footing offensively in a 17-7 loss to No. 12 UCLA, with the passing game unable to generate enough production to keep the Badgers in contention. Third-down struggles and costly penalties also made it difficult for Wisconsin to build momentum against a ranked opponent.
1. The Passing Game Remains a Major Concern
Wisconsin's passing offense struggled to find any rhythm against UCLA, finishing with just 66 passing yards. Colton Joseph completed six of 16 passes, making it difficult for the Badgers to sustain drives or consistently threaten the Bruins through the air.
The lack of production in the passing game put additional pressure on Wisconsin's rushing attack to carry the offense. Although Joseph contributed on the ground, the Badgers needed more balance offensively to capitalize on their opportunities and challenge a ranked opponent.
2. Third-Down Struggles Cost the Badgers
Wisconsin struggled to get off the field defensively, allowing UCLA to convert 13 of 20 third-down opportunities. The Bruins repeatedly extended drives, controlled the pace of the game and limited the opportunities Wisconsin's offense had to get back into the contest.
The Badgers struggled on the other side of the ball, too, converting just three of 11 third downs. That combination made it difficult for Wisconsin to establish momentum, as UCLA consistently kept its drives alive while the Badgers failed to do the same.
3. Penalties Continue to Hurt Wisconsin
Wisconsin's discipline proved costly in Pasadena, as the Badgers were flagged 10 times for 102 yards. The penalties repeatedly put Wisconsin in difficult situations, making an already challenging offensive performance even tougher to overcome.
Against a ranked opponent, those mistakes can quickly shift momentum. Wisconsin struggled to overcome the penalties and its other offensive issues, ultimately leaving too many opportunities on the field in a seven-point loss.
