The cryptocurrency market has gained USD 840.1 billion in value during the third quarter of 2026, despite a decline in trading at spot exchanges. CoinGecko data shows on October 15 that crypto market capitalization increased 39.6% from July through September, ending the quarter at USD 2.96 trillion.
However, the ten largest tracked spot exchanges handled USD 1.65 trillion in trades, down 14.2% from USD 1.93 trillion in the second quarter. Meanwhile, the value of open perpetual futures contracts increased.
Crypto Market Cap Recovers After Three Quarterly Declines
The rebound followed three consecutive quarters of falling market value. CoinGecko recorded the strongest quarterly percentage gain since late 2024. After the recovery, market capitalization remained 4% below its level at the start of 2026.
Most of the increase occurred in August. The market gained USD 489.8 billion that month, a rise of 21.8%, which accounted for over half of the third-quarter increase. CoinGecko linked the period to U.S. Treasury plans for long-term bond buybacks and continued inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.
Ethereum also recovered that quarter. Its price climbed 71% to USD 2,684, while U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs attracted USD 3.1 billion in net inflows, according to the report. Yet Ethereum's average daily trading volume fell 23.2% to USD 11.5 billion.
Spot Crypto Trading Volume Drops as Binance Gains Share
Spot trading contracted across CoinGecko's top-ten centralized exchanges. July produced USD 443.6 billion in turnover, before the total recovered to USD 712.3 billion in August. These figures track completed purchases and sales, not the value of assets held by customers. The report does not include every exchange operating in the wider global cryptocurrency market.
Binance increased its share of the tracked spot market to 42.7%, up from 38.7% in the preceding quarter. It remained the only exchange in the group with a double-digit share. The exchange held a similar lead in spot trading earlier in 2026.
Broader market trading picked up toward September, when average daily volume reached USD 94.8 billion, compared with USD 57.7 billion in July. Nevertheless, the quarterly daily average declined 8.6% to USD 73.3 billion. That measure covers a different sample from the top-ten spot exchange total.
Crypto Perpetual Futures Open Interest Climbs Above USD 100 Billion
Open interest at CoinGecko's ten tracked centralized perpetual futures exchanges rose 40.6% during the quarter. The dollar value of outstanding positions exceeded USD 100 billion at September's close, the first quarter-end reading above that level since the third quarter of 2025.
Binance registered the largest increase, adding USD 12.7 billion in open interest. By contrast, KuCoin recorded a 41.2% decline, while Deribit's total fell 18.9%. The figures show that crypto exchanges did not share the increase evenly.
The growth of decentralized perpetual exchanges was documented earlier this year. Those venues are outside CoinGecko's top-ten centralized exchange comparison.
What the USD 100 Billion Derivatives Figure Actually Shows
Open interest measures contracts that traders have not closed. Unlike spot volume, it is a snapshot, not the sum of trades over a quarter. Perpetual futures have no fixed expiry date, and traders can use collateral to keep positions open.
Each contract has a buyer and a seller. Therefore, open interest alone cannot show whether traders expect prices to rise or fall. A September comparison of Bitcoin and altcoin futures positions described this same limit.
Moreover, the dollar value of contracts may rise when cryptocurrency prices increase, even without a matching rise in contract numbers. Since CoinGecko tracks different exchange groups, its figures cannot establish that money moved from spot markets into futures. They also do not determine how much new capital or leverage traders used.
