Chocolate brown has dominated our autumn wardrobes for the past few years, but this year, the sophisticated and refined olive green is taking over the fashion agenda, and these are the pieces you need to know about.
Chocolate brown, beige and burgundy are the holy trinity of autumnal dressing – they dependably circle back every year. The rich palette lends itself to effortless dressing, and that’s just what we need as the mornings get darker and the last thing we want to do is spend ages styling an outfit.
Chocolate brown has become something of a neutral at this point; it’s familiar, and I can chuck it on without a second thought. But recently, it’s started to feel a little flat. When I want to look elevated, I find myself compensating with extra accessories or layering, which requires a lot of brainpower at 6am while I’m stumbling around my room in the dark. No longer does the deep brown shade determine an outfit, so I’ve been looking for a colour that’s a little more commanding.
Enter: olive green. The deep, Mediterranean shade is sophisticated and saturated. It’s more considered than khaki and has a bit more life than mossy green, but it’s still not fussy and can be styled with all your favourite autumnal shades – complementing ivory, buttery beige and black.
It’s the perfect transitional shade, and so we’re leaning into all things olive this season, and we’ve found the top pieces that need to be on your radar.
M&S funnel-neck jumper with wool
The hype around funnel-neck jackets has stirred up noise around other sartorial staples, and I’m obsessed with this funnel-neck jumper. The season of cosy wool and knits is finally here, and this is soft to the touch and easy to style.
White Stuff green utility barrel trousers
Neutral barrel trousers have become an item I reach for in a crisis, so reimagined in this shade and designed at ankle-grazing length, these feel special. Simply chuck on with a white jumper or cardigan and a statement brown belt.
Topshop ultimate blazer in olive
This oversized blazer is gorgeous; I would make the case for styling as the statement co-ord, but you could also lean into the boxy boyfriend look and dress down with a pair of wide-leg jeans.
Nobody’s Child olive green jacquard floral lace trim top
The jacquard florals and black lace are everything in this Nobody’s Child top, and in satin, it’s a romantic piece you’ll return to every year.
Me+Em fluid evening tank
While the olive is utilitarian and the silhouette masculine, the silk-satin blend balances it out beautifully in this scoop tank that skims the body and transitions easily from day to night.
Nobody’s Child olive green satin slip maxi skirt
Summer might be over, but whoever told you to retire your skirts? This maxi can be worn well into autumn, especially in deep olive. The high-waisted fit allows you to pop on your favourite jumper for an understated look.
Adidas Firebird tracksuit bottoms
These straight-leg tracksuit pants are relaxed but considered. In the heritage Firebird style, the colour would look great with a cream band jacket or a mustard yellow slouchy knit.
Toast boat-neck wool sweater
I’ve had my eye on this jumper from Toast, but I’ve been waiting for the weather to make up its mind before I scooped it up. The boat neck is undeniably my favourite silhouette, and the depth of the wool-olive combo is luxe.
