Every Sunday, Thursday, or Monday, whenever the NFL has a game, you can bet NFL fans are complaining about the officiating. It’s normal, whether it’s deserved or not.
These days, it’s often deserved. Officiating is at an all-time low. And the NFL doesn’t care. Why? Record profits. Fans of all 32 NFL teams think the NFL, specifically the officials, are out to get their team. The truth is, bad calls happen in every game and affect every team. Some teams find it harder to overcome them, as penalties can shift a game’s momentum.
This has felt like a common occurrence for the Washington Commanders this season. At 1-3-1, the officials aren’t necessarily the reason the Commanders have only one win, but some calls have been egregiously bad. In Weeks 2-4, the Commanders had a touchdown taken off the board. You could say two were legitimate, but one wasn’t.
In Washington’s Week 4 loss to London, the officiating was one-sided. The Commanders were penalized 10 times, while the Colts were penalized only once. There were some really bad calls, that even had the game announcers wondering what was going on. One of those calls came in the second quarter with the Commanders ahead. Washington had just gotten off the field on a third-and-14 while leading. Everything was going right for Washington. However, after the play, officials flagged cornerback Amik Robertson for unsportsmanlike conduct, giving Indianapolis a first down. The Colts would score two plays later and never trailed again. That completely changed the game’s momentum.
Here was that play.

On Sunday, officials struck again, with Robertson on the wrong. With the Commanders leading the Giants 27-13 in the fourth quarter, Robertson intercepted Giants quarterback Jameis Winston, effectively icing the win for the Commanders. Wait, there’s a flag.
Robertson was called for pass interference.
They called pass interference on Amik Robertson for THIS! 🤦🏻♂️

The Giants scored a few plays later and went on to send the game to overtime, with the teams finishing in a 27-27 tie.
Robertson was also flagged for defensive holding with very little contact. This led Kevin Sheehan of Team 980 in Washington, D.C., to make the following observation.
Amik Robertson must have pissed off someone in the league office.

After the game, Robertson had enough, telling this to Ben Standig.

"Bullshit. But you know referees want a TV timeout. I get it, you know, bullshit."
Robertson wasn’t done. After the game, he took to his Instagram page to say the following about NFL officials.

Robertson is not wrong. Sadly, he’ll now face a fine for criticizing officials, which is often why we don't see coaches or players do it more. Perhaps they should all start doing it; the league can’t fine everyone.
Oftentimes, players complaining about officiating feels like sour grapes; Robertson has every reason to be upset after the past couple of weeks.
