Texas A&M football is seeking its first road win over Alabama since 2012, as the Aggies travel to Tuscaloosa to take on the Crimson Tide on Saturday.
It has been 328 days since Mike Elko's squad recorded a touchdown against a ranked opponent, dating back to the Lone Star Showdown against the Texas Longhorns last year. That is something the Aggies are looking to change against the 13th-ranked Tide in Bryant-Denny Stadium in Week 8.
Texas A&M is coming off its second shutout of the season, a 41-0 rout of The Citadel, while Alabama suffered a 26-10 upset loss to Tennessee last week. If Elko and company want to dethrone the Crimson Tide, they will need sharp quarterback play and to set the tone in the trenches.
Here are five things to watch in Texas A&M's road showdown against Alabama on Saturday:
How will Marcel Reed handle the intimidating road environment?
The junior from Nashville, Tennessee, enters Saturday's contest against the Crimson Tide as Texas A&M's starting quarterback with a 5-5 road record. In those games, Reed has thrown 10 interceptions, averaging one per road game. This season, he has thrown three interceptions in the Aggies' road losses to LSU and Missouri.
Texas A&M can't afford for Reed's inconsistencies to continue against an Alabama defense that has forced 10 interceptions through the first seven weeks. While the Tide are allowing 230.9 passing yards per contest, Reed could be without his star wide receiver Mario Craver, who was listed as "questionable" for the second week in a row in the initial SEC Student-Athlete Availability Report.
Can Texas A&M's defensive line make Keelon Russell feel the heat?
Tennessee lived in the backfield in last week's win over Alabama. The Vols recorded five sacks and forced two interceptions from Russell, punishing the Tide's offensive line. To keep a dangerous dual-threat quarterback like Russell from creating explosive plays, the Aggies must find ways to apply pressure, something Mike Elko's defensive unit has struggled to do in 2026.
Texas A&M ranks at the bottom of the conference with just 5.0 sacks, averaging less than 1.0 sack per game. Defensive coordinator Lyle Hemphill's group is also battling injuries, with starting defensive tackle DJ Hicks and EDGE Anto Saka listed as "questionable" against the Crimson Tide.
Can the Aggie wideouts spark offensive success against Alabama's secondary?
Despite Craver's status for Saturday's showdown, Texas A&M's offense has some young wide receivers emerging in recent weeks. Sophomore TK Norman and freshman Aaron Gregory combined for 182 yards and two touchdowns in the 41-0 shutout of The Citadel last week, showcasing their ability to stretch the field and create space using their speed.
Alabama's secondary has allowed the second-most explosive passing plays in the SEC thus far, which will play an integral role in the Aggies' offensive success.
Will Texas A&M's offensive line establish dominance up front to set up the ground game for success?
The Vols dominated the trenches and paved the way for DeSean Bishop to roll for 159 yards and two touchdowns against the Tide's rush defense, which has been excellent for the majority of the 2026 season. Alabama's defense ranks No. 6 in the SEC, allowing just 107.0 rushing yards per contest entering Saturday's matchup against Texas A&M.
However, the Aggies have two running backs, true freshman KJ Edwards and senior Rueben Owens II, who have eclipsed 300 rushing yards this season and a third, sophomore Jamarion Morrow, who has recorded 122 yards on the ground and leads the room with four touchdowns, despite missing three games due to injury. If Texas A&M's offensive line can establish dominance in the trenches, like Tennessee, it could open up the playcalling and force Alabama to respect the run.
How will the Aggie secondary perform against Russell and Alabama's talented wide receivers?
Ryan Coleman-Williams won't play this weekend, but Alabama has other wideouts who can create explosive plays on a dime. That includes sophomore Lotzeir Brooks, who has burst onto the scene and leads the Tide with 415 receiving yards.
After a slow start to the 2026 campaign, the Aggies' secondary has consistently improved each week. The unit ranks No. 3 in the league, allowing just 164.1 passing yards per game. The unit must be sharp and prevent talent like Brooks from torching them for big gains.
