Netflix has appointed former Disney executive Peter Rice as its new content chief, marking a major leadership change. The streaming platform announced on Thursday that Rice will replace Bela Bajaria, who is leaving after nearly a decade with the company. He will officially begin his new role on October 26. Rice will oversee content strategy across films, television series and live events worldwide.
Rice’s appointment has raised questions about how he will balance his new responsibilities with his existing commitments. He is also serving as executive producer for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. However, organisers have confirmed that he will continue working on the ceremonies alongside his Netflix duties. His experience in storytelling and entertainment is expected to support both roles.

Casey Wasserman, president of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games, praised Rice’s work on the ceremonies. He said Rice had developed a vision worthy of the global event and commended his ability to tell compelling stories. Wasserman also confirmed that Rice would remain executive producer, with his advice continuing to shape the ceremonies planned for 2028. He congratulated Rice on his Netflix appointment and described the streaming platform as fortunate to have him.
The leadership announcement came a day after Netflix disclosed plans for its biggest round of job cuts since 2022. The company reportedly informed staff internally that it planned to reduce its workforce by around six percent. The move would affect approximately 1,000 employees as the streaming giant reassesses its operations. Rice’s appointment now comes amid significant changes to Netflix’s leadership and workforce.
