The annual Battle of the Blues rivalry delivered another high-scoring affair between Cape Fear and Terry Sanford, as the Colts made sure the rivalry remained one-sided with a 62-27 victory over the Bulldogs.
Behind a four-touchdown performance from junior quarterback Tommy "Tres" Daughtry, Cape Fear (8-1, 4-0 Tri-County) overwhelmed Terry Sanford (3-6, 2-2) with a win-by-committee effort, forcing a second-half shutout and extending its win streak against the Bulldogs to five consecutive games.
Daughtry rushed for a score, and threw for three more touchdowns in the Friday, Oct. 23, win, with two going to junior wideout Lyndon Greene. Senior Landon Underwood contributed with a 16-yard catch and a 77-yard kick return in the second quarter.
Cape Fear's offense also spread the wealth on the ground, with running backs Darius Walker, Roderick Williams, and Harry Parker each finding the end zone with rushing touchdowns.
Following the win, coach Jake Thomas reflected on the offensive production and being a group that has grown more consistent as the season has progressed due to health and the consistency of the the offense.
"I thought we were just consistent all night," Thomas said. "Being able to move the ball, running the ball, and of course, Tres made plays when he needed to."
The Colts went into halftime with a 37-27 lead over the Bulldogs and made adjustments during the break that forced a stagnant Terry Sanford offense in the second half, not allowing the Bulldogs to get past midfield until the final quarter.
"We made some adjustments to kind of widen our guys out a little bit. They found success attacking the edges, and exposing gaps in the first half," Thomas said. "I thought that helped a little bit in the second half."
Now, Cape Fear turns its attention to 6A juggernaut Scotland to defend its Tri-County Conference title at home for a 7 p.m. kickoff next Friday.
"They're tough," Thomas said of the Fighting Scots. "We got our hands full, but we have to play our best game of the year."
