The Jeollanam-do Provincial Police Agency posted Park's name, age and mug shot on its official website starting at 10 a.m. that day. Park faces charges of robbery and murder.
Police convened a deliberation committee on disclosing personal information the previous day and decided to release his identity, citing the brutality of the crime, the gravity of the harm, the public's right to know, prevention of repeat offenses and other public interests.
Park, who is known to have no steady job, will have his personal information disclosed for 30 days through Nov. 13. A five-day grace period can be granted if the subject of disclosure files an objection, but Park reportedly raised none.
Park is accused of stabbing and strangling to death a couple in their 60s whom he knew at a house in Naju between 9:28 p.m. and 11:57 p.m. on Oct. 5.
The couple were found dead with their hands and feet bound on the afternoon of the following day.
Police plan to transfer Park in custody to the Gwangju District Prosecution Service on Oct. 16.
