Wall Street has been struggling to find its footing on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, as disappointing JPMorgan Chase earnings collided with another semiconductor selloff. Goldman Sachs delivered a blockbuster quarter, but chip stocks continued losing ground amid mounting concerns over artificial intelligence (AI) spending and Chinese competition. Meanwhile, bitcoin’s price clawed its way back above $83,400 after a punishing liquidation wave erased hundreds of millions of dollars in leveraged positions.
Key Takeaways
- Bitcoin’s price recovered to $83,445 Tuesday after briefly falling below $81,000 amid heavy liquidations.
- JPMorgan Chase missed earnings expectations, while Goldman Sachs delivered a powerful trading quarter.
- Nvidia and other chipmakers faced selling pressure as Wall Street awaited Wednesday’s inflation report.
Bitcoin’s Price Reclaims $83K as Wall Street Wobbles and Chip Stocks Take a Beating
Wall Street had two problems on Tuesday. America’s biggest banks couldn’t agree on whether business was booming, and the semiconductor industry was having another miserable day. JPMorgan Chase stumbled on earnings while Goldman Sachs came out swinging, leaving investors to sort through conflicting signals from the financial sector.

Technology shares, meanwhile, took another beating as questions surrounding artificial intelligence investments and Chinese competition rattled chipmakers. Across the cryptocurrency market, bitcoin staged a recovery of its own, climbing toward $83,500 after a liquidation-fueled retreat below $81,000 left leveraged traders nursing substantial losses.
JPMorgan Stumbles While Goldman Sachs Comes Out Swinging
Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, brought a mixed bag of third-quarter earnings from America’s banking heavyweights, with JPMorgan Chase delivering a rare disappointment. The banking giant reported earnings per share of $5.57, or approximately $5.75 after adjusting for certain securities losses, falling short of Wall Street’s roughly $5.90 consensus estimate. Revenue landed between $50.2 billion and $50.9 billion, also missing expectations.
Goldman Sachs, however, had an entirely different story to tell. The investment banking powerhouse reported earnings of $17.01 per share on $18.68 billion in revenue, propelled by a 72% year-over-year jump in equities trading revenue to $6.44 billion. Wells Fargo posted slightly better-than-expected earnings but disappointed on revenue, while Citigroup delivered results broadly in line with expectations. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley are scheduled to report on Wednesday, potentially offering investors a clearer picture of the banking industry’s financial health.
Semiconductor Stocks Get Clobbered for 5th Straight Session
While banking earnings delivered conflicting signals, semiconductor stocks faced considerably more consistent selling pressure. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index shed approximately 1.5%, extending its losing streak to five consecutive sessions and touching its lowest level in roughly four weeks. Memory and storage manufacturers absorbed some of the heaviest blows. Micron Technology declined between 3% and 4.5%, while Seagate Technology and Western Digital suffered losses approaching or exceeding 6%.
Firms like Nvidia, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Marvell Technology also traded lower. The trouble followed reports that Chinese memory manufacturer CXMT had made technological advances in higher-density memory architecture, raising fresh concerns about competitive pressures facing American semiconductor companies. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan added another wrinkle, comparing certain artificial intelligence investment practices to “casino gambling.”
The selling wasn’t confined to American markets. South Korea’s benchmark KOSPI index tumbled more than 5%, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix suffering substantial declines.
Bitcoin Fights Back After Leveraged Traders Take a Walloping
Against that uneasy backdrop, bitcoin’s price managed to recover some lost ground. At approximately 12:28 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday, bitcoin traded near $83,445, recovering from a recent low around $80,948. The rebound followed a bruising liquidation episode that reportedly eliminated between $728 million in leveraged cryptocurrency positions across different crypto markets.
Long positions accounted for approximately 83% to 89% of those liquidations, reflecting the disproportionate punishment inflicted on traders betting that prices would climb. One particularly costly position involved a roughly $9.65 million bitcoin long on Binance that was liquidated near $81,773. Despite the carnage, derivatives positioning suggested that bullish speculation hadn’t disappeared entirely.

Wall Street Waits for Its Next Inflation Reality Check
By midday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average hovered around 51,700 to 52,200, while the S&P 500 traded near 7,800 and the Nasdaq Composite remained under pressure around 27,150. Elevated Treasury yields, higher oil prices, and lingering questions about artificial intelligence valuations continued weighing on investor confidence.
Bitcoin, meanwhile, faces resistance around $84,000 to $84,250, with support near $82,000 and its recent low around $80,948. Wednesday’s consumer price index (CPI) report now looms over both markets, followed by producer price data on Thursday. Bitfinex analysts told Bitcoin.com News on Monday that the two forthcoming inflation reports could carry considerable weight for the cryptocurrency market.
Wall Street has bank profits to celebrate, chip losses to explain, and inflation numbers to confront. Bitcoin has recovered from its latest liquidation scare, and stocks are meandering, but none of the markets out there today have established that the worst of the selling is behind them. By the end of writing this report, at 1:15 p.m., bears were suppressing bitcoin’s price, and BTC was struggling to hold $83,000.
A few minutes prior, at 1:10 p.m., the leading crypto asset tapped an intraday low of $83,062.
