The Dallas Cowboys made a massive bet to fix their defense this year, but the results are ugly. They hired Christian Parker, a young coordinator who won a Super Bowl with Philadelphia, hoping he could bring order to the chaos. Instead, the unit remains one of the worst in the entire league. According to PhillyVoice, the team allowed the second-most yards and seventh-most points in the NFL just six weeks into the season.
Leadership changed, but the breakdowns did not. The front office traded away Micah Parsons and Osa Odighizuwa while bringing in Pro Bowl tackle Quinnen Williams. They also used high draft picks on Caleb Downs and acquired Joey Porter Jr. These moves were supposed to make Dallas a contender. The reality is stark. The defense ranks among the league’s worst despite all that talent and money. Per the official Dallas Cowboys site, writer Nick Eatman noted that giving the unit more time is not a realistic solution when the product is this bad.
Third Down Woes Are Real
The biggest failure shows up on third down, where the defense simply cannot get off the field. PhillyVoice reported that Dallas holds the third-worst EPA per play on third down, a metric that hurts the team badly. The Packers exposed this weakness on Sunday night at Lambeau Field. Green Bay faced third down eleven times in the first half and converted ten of those attempts. Jordan Love completed all seven of his passes on those crucial downs.
Even when the distance was manageable, the Cowboys could not stop the drive. In the first half, the Packers converted third downs with an average of 13 yards. This is not a small margin of error. It is a complete collapse of the defensive plan. Parker is trying to use his mentor’s playbook to turn things around, but nothing is working yet. The numbers do not lie about how bad the situation has become.
More Help Arrives Too Late
To help Parker navigate the mess, the organization knows something is wrong and has hired a senior defensive advisor. This move comes after the team realized their first season under Parker is turning treacherous. Patrik Walker wrote for the official Cowboys site that the defense has been ravaged by injuries, forcing Parker to play backups at key spots.
The offense cannot carry the team forever. The Eagles are next on the schedule, and their interior line will test the Cowboys’ weak spots. If the defense cannot stop the run or get pressure up the middle, Dallas will struggle to win. The hope is that adding Mike Pettine as an advisor will help the progress ratchet up very soon.
