Gold ornaments worth a family’s lifetime savings were allegedly stolen from a woman’s vanity bag while she was watching Durga Puja celebrations at Muri Bazar in Barpeta Road on Tuesday night.
The incident reportedly took place at Muri Bazar in Barpeta Road, where Mithu Choudhury, a resident of Haritakitola, went to Puja celebrations with her daughter on Tuesday night.
According to reports, the woman had carried all the gold ornaments kept at her home in a small purse, which she placed inside her vanity bag. The mother and daughter had reportedly decided to carry the jewellery with them out of fear that their house might be targeted by thieves while they were away for the festivities.
However, while they were busy watching the Puja celebrations, an unidentified person allegedly opened the zip of the vanity bag and stole the small purse containing the gold ornaments. The theft reportedly went unnoticed amid the festive crowd.
The woman is said to belong to an economically disadvantaged family and lives in a rented house, without a home of her own. The gold ornaments represented years of savings and hopes for her daughter’s future.
