Cowboys fans have reason to panic: Dallas' defense is making history for the wrong reasons

The Dallas Cowboys have a problem that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore, and the numbers suggest it will not be solved overnight. Dallas is the only NFL team to allow at least 375 yards in each of its first five games, according to NFL.com senior editor Dan Parr.

The Cowboys have also surrendered 20 or more points in 12 consecutive contests dating back to last season, the longest active streak of its kind in the league. Those statistics paint a troubling picture for a team whose postseason ambitions depend on fixing a defense that has struggled to stop almost anyone.

And with the Green Bay Packers looming on Sunday night, Dallas could be facing precisely the kind of opponent capable of exposing its weaknesses. Parr picked Green Bay to beat the Cowboys this weekend, adding to the anxiety surrounding a Dallas defense that has yet to demonstrate it can consistently get off the field.

Two statistics that should worry Cowboys fans

Allowing 375 or more yards in five straight games is a warning sign on its own. Sustaining that kind of defensive vulnerability makes it difficult to control the pace of a game, limit an opponent's scoring opportunities and protect a lead. The Cowboys have been unable to break that pattern through the opening stretch of the season.

Opponents have repeatedly found ways to move the football, putting pressure on Dallas to keep pace offensively rather than allowing the defense to deliver timely stops. The second statistic may be even more concerning. The Cowboys have allowed at least 20 points in 12 consecutive games, a streak that stretches back into last season and stands as the NFL's longest active run.

That is not simply a matter of one bad afternoon or a matchup against an especially explosive offense. The streak points to a persistent problem that has carried across multiple weeks and into a new season. For a franchise expected to compete in the NFC, the implications are obvious: if the defense cannot consistently limit yardage or prevent opponents from reaching 20 points, the offense may have to play nearly mistake-free football just to keep Dallas in contention.

Why the Packers could be a dangerous matchup

Green Bay presents a difficult test for a defense already struggling to find answers. The Packers have the potential to exploit a unit that has repeatedly allowed opponents to sustain drives and generate yardage. If Dallas cannot disrupt Green Bay early, force third-and-long situations or create turnovers, the Cowboys could spend another evening chasing the game.

The danger is not limited to the total number of yards surrendered. Long drives wear down a defense, restrict opportunities for adjustments and leave little margin for error. Even when an offense produces points of its own, that kind of defensive performance can make winning a game far more complicated than it needs to be.

Parr's prediction that Green Bay will prevail reflects the uncertainty surrounding Dallas' ability to correct its defensive problems in time for a demanding matchup. For the Cowboys, the challenge is straightforward but difficult: generate pressure, tighten coverage and make opponents work harder for every first down. Without meaningful improvement in those areas, the same problems could continue regardless of the opponent.

Dallas cannot keep asking its offense to bail it out

A struggling defense can sometimes survive if an offense consistently produces explosive plays and puts up enough points to win shootouts. But that is a risky formula over a full season, particularly against playoff-caliber opponents.

Dallas needs its defense to contribute more than occasional stops. It must become capable of changing the momentum of games, getting off the field on third down and giving the offense favorable field position. The current statistics suggest that has not happened often enough.

The Cowboys' 12-game streak of allowing at least 20 points also leaves little room for optimism that the issue will disappear on its own. Until Dallas demonstrates that it can string together stronger defensive performances, opponents will have a clear reason to attack that side of the ball.

That does not mean the season is doomed. Five games are not a complete measure of a team's potential, and defensive performance can improve through better execution, personnel adjustments and more effective game planning. But the Cowboys need to show tangible progress rather than rely on the hope that things will eventually turn around.
