The federal government has identified impersonation, electronic payment fraud, cyber-stalking, online exploitation, and identity theft as some of the prominent digital platforms used by scammers and hackers to exploit, stalk, coerce or harm Nigerians.
Against the backdrop, the government has again reiterated its commitment to ending the scourge.
This was made known at the Annual Sensitisation campaign held in Abuja on Friday.
Speaking at the event, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, restated the government’s readiness and determination to flush out those involved in it, but that it needed cooperation in detecting and prosecuting offenders.
Represented by the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), the AGF said the move was to secure the nation’s digital future.
He said, “The whole of government and whole of society approach, the joint case team on cybercrimes, under the Federal ministry of justice is cautioning Nigerians not to fall a victim, insisting that the day of reckoning awaits perpetrators.
“This forum has agreed to take the message to the grassroots that even after many years, the long arm of the law will still catch up with the perpetrators.”
In his remarks, the chairman, Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrimes, Shuaib Salisu Afolabi Salisu, said reforms had already been carried out by the legislative arms through the Cybercrimes Act 2015, and that it had helped in sanitising the cyber space in the country.
