By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 26-year-old Belize City man found himself in trouble with the law after police caught him riding his bicycle against the flow of traffic on the very street where he lives.
Jermaine Lewis, a resident of King Street, was detained on Saturday, October 10, 2026, after police observed him riding his bicycle in the wrong direction along the one-way street.
Lewis was escorted to the nearby Precinct 1 Police Station, also located on King Street, where he was charged with causing a bicycle to proceed up a one-way street.
He appeared before the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, October 13, and pleaded guilty to the traffic offence.
The Magistrate imposed a fine of $50 plus $5 court costs, giving Lewis until November 30, 2026, to pay or face one week in prison.
Riding a bicycle against the designated flow of traffic is an offence under Belize’s traffic laws, and similar violations have resulted in fines and, in some cases, imprisonment for unpaid penalties.
