Five suspects have been arrested after an alleged attempt to sell a live pangolin for R500 000 was foiled during a Hawks sting operation in White River, Mpumalanga.
The suspects, aged between 34 and 58, were arrested on Tuesday during an operation targeting an alleged illegal wildlife transaction at a scrap metal business in Rockeys Drift.

Members of the Hawks’ Nelspruit Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit conducted the operation at approximately 09:55 after receiving information from a source.
The White River K9 Unit assisted in the operation, which resulted in the five arrests and the recovery of the pangolin.
Pangolin rescued and taken for treatment
The pangolin was handed over to the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA).
The animal was subsequently taken to a veterinarian for treatment and care.
Two vehicles, a Volkswagen Polo and a Toyota Etios, were also seized during the operation. They were handed over to the Nelspruit Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit for further investigation.
The Hawks have not disclosed the identities of the suspects.
Suspects expected in court
The five suspects are expected to appear before the White River Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 21 October.
They are expected to face a charge relating to the conveyance of a live wild animal.
The case forms part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat the illegal trade in protected wildlife species.
Acting Hawks Provincial Head in Mpumalanga, Brigadier Bruce Davenport, said the organisation remained committed to working with law enforcement agencies and conservation authorities to tackle wildlife-related crime.
He said the Hawks would continue efforts to dismantle criminal networks involved in the illegal trade of protected species.
The outcome of the court proceedings and the animal’s condition following veterinary treatment have not yet been confirmed.
