Manchester United are reportedly prioritising a move for RB Leipzig defender David Raum as Michael Carrick looks to strengthen his defensive options ahead of the January transfer window.
According to a report from CaughtOffside, the Germany international has become a top target for the Red Devils, who are preparing to address backline weaknesses after investing heavily elsewhere in the squad.
David Raum could be an ideal defensive addition
The 28-year-old has established himself as a reliable Bundesliga performer, combining defensive aggression with the ability to contribute effectively in attack.
Manchester United are keen to improve their left-back options, and Raum could offer an experienced solution to their ongoing concerns in that position. His ability to deliver dangerous crosses, support attacking transitions and contribute defensively would make him an attractive addition to Carrick’s squad.
United have explored several alternatives, including Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde, Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite. However, Raum is believed to be one of the more attainable options available to the Premier League giants.
His contract situation could also work in United’s favour. The defender’s current agreement with Leipzig expires in the summer of 2027, which could encourage the German club to sell in January rather than risk losing him for a reduced fee later.
Manchester United could secure a bargain deal for Raum
Despite his importance to Leipzig, Raum could represent a financially sensible option for United compared with younger defenders commanding substantial transfer fees.
The Germany international is reportedly open to testing himself in the Premier League, which could strengthen the Red Devils’ position if negotiations progress.
Manchester United have already invested heavily in their attack and midfield, and defensive reinforcements are now becoming a priority. Raum’s experience and versatility could help address those concerns without requiring the club to commit an excessive fee.
However, Leipzig must first decide whether they are prepared to sanction his departure midway through the campaign.
With January approaching, United could accelerate their pursuit if an agreement emerges. Raum remains a promising option as Carrick looks to build a more balanced and dependable defensive unit.
