Samantha Ruth Prabhu is acing pregnancy style. Her appearances, especially during the festive season, can easily become an inspiration for moms-to-be navigating the tricky landscape dressing for celebrations and wedding invitations, while occasion wear is riddled with elaborate embellishments and restrictive cuts. Recently, for an episode on the show Celebrity MasterChef, on which Ruth Prabhu is a host, the actor wore a rich purple cape and skirt set from designer Mrunalini Rao’s eponymous label that prioritised comfort without compromising on ceremonial style.

The cape is the hero of the look, thanks to its generous proportions and the exposed shoulder that lends the silhouette a contemporary edge. Cut with a high neckline and an asymmetrical, one-shoulder design, Rao's cape is covered in a medley of floral, paisley, ornamental and jewel-inspired motifs. “Ornate Indian motifs scattered all across this one-shoulder piece makes it a beautiful contemporary design,” shares Rao. Multi-coloured resham embroidery and zardozi accents bring the patterns to life, with vivid pink, green, red and gold details standing out against the deep purple base. The scalloped hem is finished with handmade tassels in contrasting colours. It is paired with a fluid silk drape skirt. “We modernise our signature embroideries on to contemporary silhouettes, so one can style them as per their personality and own it, just like how Samantha did,” adds the designer.
Ruth Prabhu accessorised the ensemble with polki and ruby chandbali earrings from Shri Paramani Jewels. Her hair was pulled into a sleek high ponytail, and makeup stayed in neutral tones to complement the rich outfit.
Expectant mothers can take a leaf out of Ruth Prabhu’s combination of a loose, statement-making cape and a flowy skirt to build a fuss-free occasion wear wardrobe without resorting to predictable maternity silhouettes. Her recent sartorial choices, from a cropped, relaxed anarkali to a sari, also underline the versatility of Indian dressing during pregnancy. The star’s approach offers a practical takeaway: prioritise pieces that allow ease of movement, play with proportion, then let colour, craftsmanship and one statement jewellery do the work.
