SASSA Grant Payment Dates for December 2026

SOUTH AFRICA · SOCIAL GRANTS

SASSA payment dates December 2026 start on Wednesday, 2 December, under the annual calendar the agency released in March.

The SASSA payment dates December 2026 follow the agency’s usual three-day sequence: older persons first, then disability grants, then children’s grants. SASSA’s 2026/27 schedule, released on Monday, 23 March, sets them for Wednesday, 2 December, to Friday, 4 December.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is the state body that pays the country’s social grants each month. For a family abroad sending support home, these dates show when grant money for older relatives and children normally arrives.

December 2026 Payment Dates by Grant

The December dates below come from SASSA’s 2026/27 payment calendar, as reproduced by TimesLIVE when the schedule was released in March. SASSA normally confirms each month’s dates again shortly before the month starts, as it did for October in mid-September.

• Older persons grant: Wednesday, 2 December 2026
• Disability grant: Thursday, 3 December 2026
• Children’s grants (child support, foster child and care dependency): Friday, 4 December 2026

None of these days is a public holiday, so the scheduled dates do not need to shift. The next national holiday is the Day of Reconciliation on Wednesday, 16 December, well after the payment run.

Grant money paid into an account stays there after the payment day, so there is no need to queue on day one. Visiting later in the week usually means shorter queues at pay points and shops.

How SASSA Sets the Payment Calendar

SASSA said in March that grants are paid “as early in the month as possible, staggered over three days”. In most months, it said, older persons are paid on the 2nd, disability on the 3rd and children on the 4th.

The agency also avoids the 1st of the month, Mondays, the day after a holiday and weekends where it can. If a payment date falls on a weekend or public holiday, the payment takes effect on the following working day.

National Treasury approved the 2026/27 schedule on Friday, 20 March, according to the SASSA statement carried by SAnews, the government news agency. The same calendar placed October payments on Friday, 2 October, Monday, 5 October, and Tuesday, 6 October.

Grant Amounts From April 2026

The 2026 Budget Review, released by National Treasury on Wednesday, 25 February, set the monthly amounts paid since April. Values below convert at 16.51 rand per US$1, the open.er-api.com rate on 12 October.

• Older persons grant: R2,400 (about US$145), up from R2,315
• Disability grant: R2,400 (about US$145)
• Care dependency grant: R2,400 (about US$145)
• War veterans grant: R2,420 (about US$147)
• Foster child grant: R1,295 in the Budget Review, R1,290 in SASSA’s March statement (about US$78 either way)
• Child support grant and grant-in-aid: R580 (about US$35), up from R560
• Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant: R370 (about US$22), unchanged

For scale, about US$145 equals 20 hours of work at the US federal minimum wage of US$7.25. The child support grant of about US$35 a month is paid per child to the primary caregiver.

The SRD Grant in December

The Social Relief of Distress grant is the R370 (about US$22) monthly payment for unemployed adults with no other income. It is not part of the three-day calendar above, and applicants check their payment status on SASSA’s SRD portal, srd.sassa.gov.za.

Treasury allocated an extra R36.4 billion (about US$2.2 billion) to keep SRD payments going until 31 March 2027. SASSA has not published fixed December 2026 SRD payment days, so applicants should rely on the status shown on the portal.

Collecting Your Grant Safely

SASSA urged beneficiaries who do not receive their grant on the scheduled date to visit their nearest SASSA local office. The agency’s toll-free line, 0800 60 10 11, handles questions about payments and grant status.

Grant reviews have continued into 2026, and Treasury said bank and credit bureau checks flagged 291,581 beneficiaries for review by December 2025. Treasury said a further 34,661 grants were cancelled as a result of that review process.

A separate report explains the wave of SASSA grant suspensions in 2026 and what triggered them. Holders of the old green ID book should note its end on 31 March 2028.

What It Means for You

If you support relatives in South Africa from the United States, plan transfers around these dates. A delay of even a few days matters to recipients who budget their whole month around the grant.

Remittance apps and banks can take a working day or more to clear rand payments. Sending money before Wednesday, 2 December lets it land alongside the grant rather than after the holiday shopping rush.

What Is Not Known

SASSA has not yet issued a separate statement confirming the December 2026 dates, as it usually does a few weeks ahead. It is also not known whether the agency’s review of November dates around the local elections will affect December.

SASSA’s own website could not be reached for this guide, so the calendar is cited from its March release. The small gap between the R1,295 and R1,290 foster child grant figures has not been explained publicly.

What Comes Next

SASSA is expected to announce revised November arrangements first, after the local government elections fall on Wednesday, 4 November. The report on SASSA’s review of November 2026 grant dates explains that clash in detail.

A December confirmation should follow in November on SASSA’s official social media accounts and through SAnews. Until then, the March calendar remains the only official guide, and it does not mean any grant amount will change.
