Algeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement condemning Colombia’s decision to open its embassy in East Jerusalem.
Al Jazeera reported early Thursday, October 15, that Saudi Arabia and Jordan had also condemned Colombia’s decision.
According to the report, Algeria described the move as “regrettable and unacceptable” and a clear violation of international law.
The Algerian statement said: “This regrettable decision is an unacceptable act carried out as part of repeated and illegitimate attempts to alter the legal and historical status of Jerusalem and impose a fait accompli. It constitutes a clear violation of international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.”
Algeria added that the move undermines the two-state solution, which is supported by the international community, and contributes to escalating regional tensions.
The development comes after the United States, during Donald Trump’s first term as president, recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
