BlackRock wants to give nervous Bitcoin investors a seatbelt. On October 19, 2026, the asset manager filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF.
The pitch is simple. Investors get upside exposure tied to BlackRock’s flagship iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), plus a layer of downside protection.
What BlackRock is building
The proposed fund is designed to track gains linked to IBIT while limiting losses when the market turns.
BlackRock has not publicly disclosed a ticker symbol, a fee structure, or a launch timeline for the product.
The fund would sit on top of IBIT rather than holding Bitcoin through some entirely new structure.
How BlackRock got here
IBIT launched in January 2024 as one of the first spot Bitcoin exchange-traded products in the US. It has since become the market leader in the category, with assets in the tens of billions and heavy trading volume.
In June 2026, BlackRock rolled out the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA). That fund aims to generate yield by selling call options on IBIT, a strategy known as covered calls.
BlackRock’s digital asset ETF assets reached approximately $80 billion in Q3 2026.
What this means for investors and the ETF market
For investors, the most immediate implication is choice. Someone who wants Bitcoin exposure through BlackRock may soon be able to pick between raw exposure, income generation, and downside protection, all built around the same underlying fund.
When BlackRock eventually discloses fees and mechanics, investors will want to compare the protected version against simply holding IBIT.
The product still needs to clear the SEC process before it can trade.
Key items to track from here include the fund’s ticker, its fee level, the specifics of how the downside protection works, and any launch date.
