Angel Reese gets superstar treatment despite major offensive flaws, questionable rebounding narratives, and constant controversy surrounding her name.
Angel Reese might be the most overhyped player in women’s basketball. For someone who receives so much media attention, endorsement money, and superstar treatment, her offensive game is shockingly limited.
Let’s start with the biggest problem: Reese is a terrible offensive player by superstar standards.
Her struggles finishing around the basket are difficult to ignore. Missed layups, awkward post moves, and a lack of consistent shooting make her offensive performances frustrating to watch. How can someone receive this much praise while struggling with some of basketball’s most basic offensive skills?
And don’t even get started on the rebounding numbers.
Reese’s supporters love pointing to her massive rebounding totals as proof of her greatness. But how many of those offensive rebounds come after she misses her own shots? Critics have repeatedly raised that question, and it’s a legitimate issue when evaluating her production.
Missing an easy layup, grabbing the rebound, and missing again shouldn’t be celebrated like some incredible accomplishment.
Then there’s the never-ending controversy.
Whether it’s social media arguments, public comments, or the constant attention surrounding her rivalries, Reese always seems to find herself at the center of another debate. At some point, the drama becomes exhausting, especially when her offensive performances don’t justify the superstar image.
The WNBA has players who can score efficiently, create their own shots, and consistently dominate offensively. Yet Reese continues to receive an enormous amount of attention despite having significant limitations in those areas.
That’s what makes the hype so difficult to understand.
Angel Reese has the publicity of a generational superstar without the offensive skill set to match.
Until her offensive game improves dramatically, the criticism isn’t going anywhere. And perhaps the biggest controversy surrounding Angel Reese isn’t anything she says or does.
It’s the fact that so many people continue treating her like an elite basketball player when her offensive game tells a very different story.
