Delhi HC Plea On CJP Leaders Custody, Peace Bond Breach Row & Protest Clampdown
The Delhi High Court is set to hear a petition challenging the continued judicial custody of Cockroach Janata Party leaders Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka in Tihar Jail. The duo challenged the 19th October order after a magistrate extended their detention till 21st October and rejected their sureties. Investigators and police maintain that the leaders deliberately breached their signed peace bond, which barred them from participating in illegal protests for a year. Authorities alleged that the leaders trespassed into the de-notified protest site at Jantar Mantar, breached police barricades, and obstructed public servants from carrying out their duties. Meanwhile, the petitioners argue that they possess a democratic right to hold peaceful protests, questioning their detention. While party founder Abhijit Dipke called Das and Ranka the real decision-makers and announced a halt on protests until Diwali, opposition voices accused the administration of arbitrarily arresting student leaders and suppressing dissent.
Pulivendula Violence: CM Naidu Hits Out at YSRCP; Top Court Grants Relief Over Poll Plea
Tensions escalated in Andhra Pradesh following reported violence and candidate intimidation in Pulivendula ahead of the local municipal elections. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu hit back at the YSR Congress Party, asserting that violence is in their DNA and accusing them of obstructing government initiatives and reservations. In response to allegations of candidate harassment, shop burning, and vehicles being torched, the YSRCP approached the Supreme Court seeking intervention. Granting relief to the party, the apex court directed the State Election Commission to examine the complaints by 22 October. Observing that judicial deference cannot render constitutional courts powerless when free and fair elections are at stake, the bench stated that the publication of the final candidates list may be deferred until 25 October if deemed necessary. The directive follows YSRCP's allegations that its candidates faced severe intimidation and obstacles while attempting to file their nomination papers for the local body elections.
