Preparations are currently underway to relocate approximately 900 people from certain villages vulnerable to flooding to higher ground, following embankment subsidence at the Ma Mya Reservoir in Myanaung Township, according to a notification issued by the Ayeyawady Region Government on 10 October.
The incident occurred on the morning of 7 October and prompt actions were taken to fill outer surface cracks with sand and cover them with plastic sheeting to prevent water seepage. However, further slope sliding occurred on the night of 9 October, resulting in the dam crest sinking approximately 25 feet below its original level.
According to statements, heavy machinery is currently being used to discharge water via the emergency spillway in an effort to reduce the reservoir’s water level from 315 feet to 305 feet. The released waters flow through Ye War and Ma Mya Creeks into the Ngawun River, ensuring that surrounding agricultural fields remain unaffected.
Meanwhile, arrangements are being made to evacuate and relocate around 900 residents to safe areas in advance. GNLM
