Through the first five games of the season, Giants running back Cam Skattebo had hit double-digit carries in each week. That completely changed in Sunday's Week 6 game against the Saints.
Skattebo went an entire game without a carry and only appeared for six snaps despite being healthy. Now, the second-year running back could have been upset about the sudden decrease in workload. Instead, he took an accountable approach.
He told reporters after the game that his Week 5 lost fumble was to blame for his zero carries. It was a decision from head coach John Harbaugh that he accepted.
He said via Pro Football Talk:
“I got punished for what I did and I understand it. I gotta be ready when coach calls my name and that wasn’t today. . . . The message was keep your head down and keep going. They understand the type of player I am and I just gotta continue to do my job and do it to the best of my abilities.”
...
“It’s hard, but I’ve made mistakes and I got to own up to them. If that is what they want to do — keep me on the sidelines because of that — I totally understand. I can’t make mistakes at this level of this game and when you make mistakes like that, consequences will be had.”
With Skattebo being shut out, the Giants went with a limited-but-split rushing approach. Tyrone Tracy Jr. had a team-high six carries in the loss.
