KUALA LUMPUR: A Parti Bersama Malaysia (Bersama) member wants the party to take civil legal action and lodge a police report against those accused of spreading defamatory allegations linking a senior party leader to a khalwat arrest case.
Bersama member for Wangsa Maju, Ahmad Fariz Abdullah, said legal action should be initiated against those who originated and spread the allegations, including social media account owners and news portals involved.
He claimed that the allegations were politically motivated and intended to tarnish the leader's reputation and the party's good name ahead of the Melaka election.
In a statement today, he also warned social media users against speculating about or sharing content containing the allegations.
"Today, I express my anger and condemn the irresponsible actions of any party attempting to link a senior party leader to a khalwat arrest case.
"This reckless act is a deliberate, malicious and vile smear campaign aimed at character assassination and completely destroying the reputation of the leader concerned and the good name of Bersama," he said.
Ahmad Fariz made the call amid speculation over the identity of the politician arrested by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) on suspicion of committing khalwat at about 6pm yesterday.
Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad was reported as saying that two people had been arrested under Section 29 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.
