The owner of Pawtopia, a pet boarding centre in Negombo, has reportedly failed to attend a police inquiry scheduled for today (25) into the death of a dog named Tango, who died after being brutally beaten at the facility.
The Katana Police had summoned the owner in connection with the incident. However, he informed the police today (25) that he would be unable to attend because he had to attend an urgent funeral.
He reportedly requested that the police inquiry be rescheduled for Tuesday, stating that he would be able to attend on that day.
Meanwhile, the Animal Welfare Coalition (AWC) – Sri Lanka has revealed that the individual who brutally beat Tango is a resident of Tangalle and is currently believed to have fled his home and gone into hiding.
The AWC further stated that attorney Sujeewa Gamage had requested the Katana Police to file serious additional charges against Pawtopia and its owner, in addition to the animal cruelty charges previously brought against the establishment. These include criminal breach of trust, concealing an offence and harbouring an offender.
He has also reportedly urged the Officer-in-Charge of the police station to immediately arrest all the suspects under the relevant legal provisions and produce them before the court.
