The African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE), Abuja, has secured Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification, strengthening its commitment to sustainable infrastructure, operational efficiency and specialised healthcare delivery in Africa.
The certification, awarded under the Building Design and Construction (BD+C) programme, recognises building design and construction practices that promote energy and water efficiency, improved indoor environmental quality and responsible use of materials.
Developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), LEED is a globally recognised green building certification system that assesses environmental performance and sustainability in buildings.
Brian Deaver, Chief Executive Officer of AMCE, said the certification reflected the Centre’s ambition to establish a world-class healthcare institution where sustainability, operational excellence and patient-centred care remain central to its operations.
He noted that delivering quality healthcare required more than clinical expertise and advanced medical technology, stressing the importance of infrastructure that supports efficiency, resilience and the well-being of patients, staff and visitors.
According to him, the achievement reinforces AMCE’s ambition to set new standards for specialised healthcare in Africa while ensuring that its infrastructure contributes to long-term institutional value.
The certification also highlights the importance of building environments that support patient care through considerations such as indoor air quality, lighting and thermal comfort.
Isaac Owusu Adjakwah, Director of Facilities and Estate Management at AMCE, said sustainable design and resource efficiency were critical to the reliable operation of a specialised healthcare institution.
He explained that the Centre would build on the achievement through effective facilities management, responsible energy and water consumption, regular performance monitoring and continuous improvement.
Healthcare facilities typically depend on energy-intensive systems, specialised equipment and reliable building services. Sustainable design can help establish a foundation for better resource management and operational efficiency, although sustained benefits depend on effective building management.
For AMCE, these measures could create opportunities to optimise building systems, manage utility costs and strengthen its environmental, social and governance (ESG) credentials.
The Centre said it would continue focusing on responsible infrastructure management as it advances its work in specialised healthcare, research, education and innovation.
The LEED Silver certification marks another milestone in AMCE’s ambition to combine advanced medical services with sustainable infrastructure and contribute to the future of healthcare delivery across Africa.
