The roller coaster ride that has been Jakub Vrana’s pro hockey career since he left the Detroit Red Wings is in the midst of yet another downward spiral.
Now playing for Linköping in Sweden’s SHL, Vrana found himself riding the pine as the club’s extra forward in their most recent game.
He’s saying the right things, talking about wanting to battle his way back into more regular ice time.

“I have to respect the decision,” Vrana told Swedish website Expressen. “I think it’s about some bad substitutions in the last game. I ended up wrong in the positional game quite a few times. I admit that I did.
“There’s not much I can do about it now. I just have to accept the decision and move on.”
Last season, during his first campaign back with Linköping, Vrana found himself in the team’s doghouse on a few occasions. This time, it’s only taken him seven games to fall out of favor with the team’s coaching staff.
Rough Go For Vrana Since Leaving Red Wings
Vrana has proven to be a hockey vagabond since leaving the Red Wings organization during the 2023-24 season. He’s made NHL stops with the St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals, and Nashville Predators. There were also AHL stints with the Grand Rapids Griffins and Springfield Thunderbirds before arriving in Linköping.

He’s not anxious to move again. Vrana is willing to take his medicine and work his way back into the good graces of the team’s staff.
“It’s something that makes me extra disappointed,” Vrana said. “I went through this last year, and I think I started to get going towards the end of the season. I was playing better and feeling really good on the ice. I had a good summer, and I was hoping to continue on that path and build on it this season. So it’s sad for me that it feels like a step back.
“At the same time, it’s a roller coaster. Ice hockey is a sport where there are ups and downs. You’re not always going to have great games. Sometimes you have mediocre games, and sometimes you don’t really recognize yourself. But that’s how it is. I’m a professional, and that’s really all I can say, to be honest.”
