Apple is testing under-display Face ID for the iPhone Duo 2, according to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. The feature could replace the Touch ID sensor found on the company’s first foldable iPhone.
The iPhone Duo is now reaching customers who pre-ordered it last week. However, early reviews have highlighted several first-generation issues, including concerns about the Touch ID sensor.
Reviewers say the sensor can be difficult to reach depending on how users hold the device. It also requires users to keep their fingers on the sensor to unlock the phone fully.
As a result, Face ID has become a widely requested feature for the next model. During his latest Power On podcast, Gurman revealed that Apple is testing iPhone Duo 2 units with an under-display version of its facial recognition system.
However, it remains unclear whether Apple can bring the feature to market next year. Its inclusion will depend on whether the company can make key components, including the dot projector and infrared camera, small enough to fit beneath the display.
