The Falcons didn’t explain why they’d shared the image, but Diario AS USA speculated that it was posted in anticipation of this weekend’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.
That game will be played in 1966-inspired throwback uniforms, including red helmets, black jerseys, and white pants for the Falcons.
But many people joked that the logo was more of a throwback to 1941: specifically, to the eagle symbol the Nazis used during World War II. The Nazi-esque color scheme in the background didn’t help, prompting an avalanche of snarky jokes about the “Bird Reich.”
The fallout was bad enough that the team switched its online profile pic to show the same black falcon on a red football helmet instead — without the background stripes, and without announcing the change.

HuffPost reached out to the Falcons for comment on the logo outcry, but no one immediately responded.
Although Falcons owner Arthur Blank is Jewish and has donated significant money for Holocaust remembrance causes, this isn’t the first time the team’s logo has inspired Nazi comparisons.
In 2024, the Falcons were inundated with online ridicule afterposting a photo on X of the helmet logo it used in the 1960s.
