India's Supreme Court today (13 October) stayed further proceedings in a defamation case against Congress MP Rahul Gandhi over his remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019.
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Aparesh Kumar Singh issued notices to the Maharashtra government and the complainant, MH Shrishrimal, seeking their responses within four weeks.
"Issue notices returnable in four weeks. Further proceedings before the trial court shall remain stayed," the bench ordered.
Rahul Gandhi's plea challenged an 8 September order of the Bombay High Court, which refused to quash the summons issued against him.
The complaint was filed by BJP member Mahesh Shrishrimal before a magistrate's court in Girgaon, Mumbai.
The complainant alleged that Rahul Gandhi made defamatory statements against Modi at a rally in Rajasthan in September 2018.
The magistrate summoned Rahul Gandhi in August 2019. After receiving the summons in July 2021, Gandhi challenged the order before the Bombay High Court.
