Shillong, Oct 16: The roar of motorcycles, colourful murals and culinary contests brought a festive touch to West Khasi Hills as the district marked its Golden Jubilee with activities celebrating community participation, creativity and social awareness.
A bike rally from Nongshram to Nongstoiñ was among the highlights, with Shallang Riders joined by local biking groups, including Western Royal Brothers MC, and other motorcycle enthusiasts. The rally culminated at the Indoor Sports Stadium in Nongstoiñ, where Deputy Commissioner Hema Nayak welcomed the riders and appreciated their participation in the district’s 50-year celebrations.
The celebrations also took an artistic turn, with the District Administration and the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer organising a wall painting competition to promote a drug-free society. The event was held under the theme “Empowered Women Leading the Way to a Drug-Free Tomorrow in West Khasi Hills District.”
Participants used art to highlight the role of women in raising awareness about substance abuse and encouraging healthier communities.
Shiningstar Nonglang won first place in the competition, followed by Banniewkor Marbaniang in second place and Kyrshanbor Marthong in third.
The programme also featured a cooking competition for Anganwadi workers and helpers, showcasing their culinary skills while drawing attention to the importance of nutritious food in children’s growth and development.
Assistant Commissioner I. Momin, MCS, attended the programme as chief guest, along with District Social Welfare Officer D. Pakyntein and departmental staff.
