Guangzhou Port has launched the Greater Bay Area’s first zero-carbon container route, putting a battery-electric vessel into cross-border service between Nansha and Hong Kong.
The 240 teu Sui Gang Dian Hang 02 opened the route this week, carrying furniture and consumer goods to Hong Kong International Terminals.
The vessel uses containerised batteries that can be exchanged by crane or recharged directly. An onboard platform monitors energy consumption, maintenance and ship-shore operations.
Authorities estimate that each vessel in the series will eliminate more than 550 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually and over 19,000 tonnes during its operating life.
No sailing frequency, cargo commitment or wider deployment schedule was disclosed.
