Four people have been killed in a series of shootings in Strandfontein since Friday, raising fears over escalating gang violence in a community previously highlighted for its relatively low crime figures.
The latest killing occurred on Monday night, 19 October, when a 26-year-old man was gunned down in Korvette Road, just two days after a double murder in Old Strandfontein.
The violence has prompted increased police visibility, with Metro Police deployed near Strandfontein High School as worried parents began collecting their children amid safety concerns.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Frederick van Wyk confirmed that officers responded to the Korvette Road shooting at approximately 8.45pm on Monday.
"Upon members' arrival they found the body of a 26-year-old male in the front of a premises at the mentioned street. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his body."
Three shootings leave four dead
Van Wyk said a murder case had been opened and the motive was believed to be gang-related.
The shooting followed a deadly attack on Saturday, 17 October, at approximately 5.30pm in Dinghie Circle, Old Strandfontein.
Van Wyk confirmed that two men, aged 33 and 44, were killed, while two others sustained gunshot wounds.
"According to reports two white VW Polos with unknown registration numbers drove up to the victims and shot them before fleeing the scene."
Both men were declared dead at the scene by medical personnel, while the injured victims were transported to separate medical facilities.
Police investigate suspected gang links
Police are investigating two counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder, with gang violence suspected as the motive.
The weekend's violence began on Friday when two 19-year-old men were shot in Church Street. One reportedly died in hospital.
The shootings stand in stark contrast to Strandfontein's previous crime figures.
According to SAPS statistics for April to June 2026, Strandfontein recorded 188 reported crimes, compared with 211 during the corresponding period in 2025, reflecting a 10.9% decrease.
The precinct recorded fewer reported crimes than 58 of Cape Town's 63 police precincts during that period, placing it among the lower-crime areas in the metro. However, this is a comparison of reported crime volumes.
Ward councillor Elton Jansen confirmed on Tuesday that he had met with Strandfontein SAPS Station Commander Captain JJL Antonie following the shootings.
Jansen said Antonie had assured him that police were doing everything possible to address the violence.
He added that Van Wyk had confirmed telephonically that experienced detectives were investigating the murders.
"This team of investigators will not leave any stone unturned to investigate and get to the bottom of these killings and gang-related violence in Strandfontein."
Extra patrols deployed near Strandfontein High School
Jansen said he had also contacted the City's Metro Police, who deployed officers to the area, particularly around Strandfontein High School.
He met with school principal on Tuesday morning as messages about the violence circulated and concerned parents arrived to fetch their children.
The ward's neighbourhood safety officers would also patrol the area, monitor suspicious activity and report concerns to the relevant authorities.
"I want to assure residents that everyone in the Safety and Security cluster, including the CPF, SAPS and the City of Cape Town Metro, are doing everything in their power to stabilise the situation in Strandfontein," Jansen said.
Police have appealed to anyone with information about the shootings to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or report information anonymously through the MySAPS application.
