WNBA star Sophie Cunningham has spoken out straight to her haters and given a subtle tease about her future basketball plans after Indiana Fever makes postseason this year.
So, what exactly should the Fever be doing to help Clark – and make the return worth it for everyone involved? As an unrestricted free agent in the offseason, Cunningham’s situation – and the way forward with superstar teammate Caitlin Clark – is now a heated topic of discussion in the sports world.
Addressing the Critics and Free Agency Speculation
After Candace Buckner of The Athletic penned a recent column proposing that the Indiana fanbase flush Cunningham and devote the roster to Clark, the veteran guard responded dismissively.
“No Hesitation” she said on her podcast:
It doesn’t matter what somebody says to me, I’m gonna keep doing me. I know what I bring to the table. It’s not always in the stat sheet.

Bucking the outside noise, Cunningham doubled down on the defiance. “Turn the music up a little bit,” she tweeted less than two months after suffering the injury, with a video of herself in a full Indiana Fever uniform lip-syncing to the song Live Your Life by T.I. and Rihanna.
What Sophie Cunningham Offers the Indiana Fever
Cunningham served as an important spark off the bench in Indiana’s 2026 WNBA season, and a strong locker-room presence as well (fans often joke that she was a “bodyguard” for her teammates on and off the court).
Elite Perimeter Shooting: Cunningham shot 41.9% from three (second on the team) and scored 67 three-pointers.
Leadership. Executive front-office staff, such as Fever GM Amber Cox, have praised her leadership and production, and all but opened the door to new contract talks.
Offseason Outlook: Her scoring has dropped off some in the second half of the season, but her ability to stretch the floor and create big plays in the clutch is still a necessary piece for head coach Stephanie White when forming a complete contender around Clark and Aliyah Boston.
What’s Next?
Now that Cunningham’s one-year deal has officially expired, she is setting her sights on unrestricted free agency. No matter where she signs on the dotted line next season, whether that’s to bring stability to the Indiana Fever or a more fruitful franchise, one thing is clear: Sophie Cunningham still has more to say.
