Laurent Mekies has been given the opportunity to lead Red Bull Racing’s future but whether he deserves a contract running through 2031 is a different question. After consecutive race victories and renewed commitment from Max Verstappen, Red Bull’s decision is understandable. But a promising, and delivering, a turnaround should not be confused with a completed rebuild.
There is an obvious temptation to connect the timing of Mekies’ contract extension with Verstappen’s victories in Malaysia and Singapore. The team returns to winning ways, the mood improves, and the boss receives a substantial vote of confidence. Through that lens, and the announcement risks looking like a generous reward for a relatively short burst of success.
Yet judging Mekies solely on those two weekends would be just as simplistic as declaring Red Bull’s problems have all been solved because Verstappen has returned to the top step.
But there is another element that is perhaps not so clear. Is that the organisation appears better placed to build towards sustained success?
Mekies inherited a team in transition, not a blank sheet
Replacing Christian Horner in July 2025 was never going to be a straightforward assignment. Mekies stepped into an organisation shaped by the same team principal for two decades, with all the expectations that come with Red Bull’s championship-winning history.
He could not reasonably be expected to claim immediate ownership of everything that worked, for much was already in the development pipeline before Horner left the team. Equally, not every weakness could fairly be attributed to him.
The late-2025 recovery, which ended with Verstappen finishing just two points behind Lando Norris in the drivers’ championship, nevertheless provided an early argument in his favour. Red Bull demonstrated that they could respond to adversity under their new leadership.
This season has offered another, more complicated test. The new regulations brought a difficult start before the team developed back into a winning contender. Mekies deserves a share of the credit for that process. But “a share” is the important qualification.
Two victories do not erase a disappointing start
The strongest argument against such a long extension is sitting in the championship picture. Red Bull are fighting to recover ground rather than setting the pace across the season. Their resurgence is encouraging, but the early difficulties this season need to be considered.
If Mekies receives credit for the recovery, his leadership must also face scrutiny over the slow start. It was not that long ago when the team were struggling to keep the car on the track, earning Verstappen a rebuke for his public criticism.
Two consecutive victories do not establish that Red Bull have produced a car capable of winning consistently across different circuits. They are evidence of progress, but not proof of lasting superiority.
The sceptical question, therefore, is reasonable to ask. Why commit through 2031 before seeing whether this improvement survives a full campaign?
A shorter extension could have expressed confidence while leaving the longer-term judgement open. Red Bull have instead chosen to make that judgement now, where really there was no pressure to do so, it makes the timing of the announcement very curious.
Keeping Verstappen strengthens the case
Verstappen’s commitment through 2030 gives Red Bull an exceptional driver around whom to plan. Mekies’ extension provides continuity alongside him.
It would be excessive to credit the Frenchman alone for Verstappen staying. The driver’s relationship with Red Bull stretches far beyond its current team principal, and there are multiple reasons behind any major career decision.
GPblog’s analysis of Mekies’ impact highlights the calmer environment he has helped establish and his close contact with Verstappen and the people around him.
Confidence in the leadership can help keep attention on development rather than allowing every setback to become a debate about the organisation’s future, but there is a limit to this argument.
Keeping Verstappen happy cannot be the sole measure of success. Red Bull need an effective two-car operation and a structure capable of delivering constructors’ championships, not simply a comfortable environment for their leading driver. It also has to have in place a production line of suitable engineering talent.
Red Bull’s recovery belongs to more than one man
The technical organisation deserves its own recognition. In his response to the announcement, Mekies specifically highlighted the importance of Pierre Wache’s and Ben Hodgkinson’s teams.
Improvements emerge from collective work, and the foundations of major projects often predate the leader who eventually oversees their results. Mekies did not arrive and build Red Bull from scratch. He inherited considerable expertise, infrastructure and ambition. The fair question is whether he is helping those resources function more effectively.
Red Bull’s shareholders are entitled to have greater confidence based on what they see internally. From the outside, however, their endorsement should be treated as a statement of belief rather than independent proof that every aspect of his leadership has succeeded.
A deserved extension, with an ambitious timescale
Ultimately, Mekies deserved a new contract. Removing uncertainty around a leader overseeing tangible progress is a sensible decision, particularly when the team has also secured its drivers. It is the length of the deal that is the more debatable element.
A deal through 2031 stretches well beyond what his current record can conclusively validate. Red Bull are gambling that the qualities behind this recovery will translate into sustained championship contention.
Continuity has value only when it supports performance. If the development stalls, if the team remains dependent on Verstappen to disguise its weaknesses, or if successive seasons begin with another recovery mission, then the justification will weaken.
For now, the balance falls in Mekies’ favour. He has helped Red Bull navigate a major leadership transition, overseen competitive improvement and built a relationship with the driver central to their immediate future, which warrants backing. His task is now to take that backing from Red Bull and build his own legacy, rather than inheriting someone else's.
