The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Venatius Ikem, has resigned from his position with immediate effect, citing a crisis of direction and leadership coherence within the party ahead of the forthcoming elections.
Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the party’s National Secretary at its Wadata House national secretariat in Abuja and copied to the Cross River State Secretary.
In the letter, the lawyer said he could “no longer effectively serve in this position” amid circumstances that increasingly challenged the party’s principles, cohesion and sense of purpose.
He described the decision as exceptionally difficult but said it followed deep introspection over the internal dynamics and disagreements affecting the party.
“As we enter a critical electoral season, I have found it increasingly difficult to reconcile my responsibilities as State Chairman with the prevailing internal dynamics and divergent positions that continue to weaken the party’s ability to pursue a clear and united course,” he said.
Ikem warned that the divisions had significantly weakened the party’s effectiveness and could undermine the sacrifices, investments and aspirations of its loyal members if left unresolved.
Ikem hints at new political direction
The outgoing chairman did not identify the individuals or factions he considered responsible for the disagreements within the party. He also did not disclose his next political move.
However, he suggested that his resignation could mark the beginning of a new political direction, saying he had reached a point where a clearer vision and a new pathway were necessary for himself and those who had entrusted him with their confidence.
“Despite the challenges, I remain grateful for the opportunity to have served the Party over the past five years,” he said.
Ikem described his five-year tenure as a privilege, expressing appreciation to leaders, members and supporters who worked with him during his time as chairman.
He particularly acknowledged Senator Sandy Onor and Senator Jarigbe Agom Jarigbe for their encouragement and support during some of the most challenging moments of his political journey.
Thanks Wike, supporters
The former chairman also recognised the national leader of the PDP and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, saying his contributions to the party’s collective efforts remained indelible and worthy of recognition.
He extended his appreciation to supporters across Cross River State, particularly the people of Obudu, his immediate constituency, for their loyalty, faith and commitment over the years.
“As I step away from this position, I remain committed to the progress, stability, and development of Cross River State and our nation,” Ikem said.
He also wished the PDP success in its future endeavours despite the challenges he identified within its ranks.
Ikem’s resignation comes as political activities gather momentum ahead of the forthcoming elections, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the PDP’s leadership and internal cohesion in Cross River State.
The development raises questions about the party’s next steps in the state as it seeks to manage internal disagreements and strengthen its political structure ahead of the electoral season.
