First Lady of Nigeria, Oluremi Tinubu, has called for expanded access to education, healthcare, skills acquisition and decent livelihoods as part of efforts to lift vulnerable families out of poverty.
She said creating meaningful economic opportunities for citizens was essential to building a society where everyone could live with dignity, have hope and realise their full potential.
The First Lady made the call in a message to mark the 2026 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, observed on Saturday, October 17, with the theme, “Dignity, Opportunity, and Shared Prosperity.”
Mrs Tinubu stressed the collective responsibility of individuals, institutions and government to create an inclusive society where no one is denied the opportunity to thrive.
According to her, sustained collaboration, effective interventions and compassion are critical to establishing pathways out of poverty and achieving shared prosperity.
“The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2026, with the theme ‘Dignity, Opportunity, and Shared Prosperity,’ reminds us of our collective responsibility to build a society where every person can live with dignity and hope, access meaningful opportunities, and thrive to realise their full potential,” she said.
She urged stakeholders to sustain efforts to expand access to essential services and economic opportunities, particularly for vulnerable families who face greater barriers to improving their living conditions.
The First Lady also emphasised the need for interventions that empower citizens to improve their livelihoods and participate meaningfully in economic activities.
The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed annually on October 17 to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people living in poverty and promote collective action towards ending poverty in all its forms.
