These breeds of dog have seldom been known to turn their nose up at a treat.

If you’ve been thinking about welcoming a new dog into your home then you’re in good company – Royal Kennel Club (the new name for the UK Kennel Club) stats show that the number of people looking for puppies has surged to record levels.

Dogs come in all shapes, colours and sizes - there are 221 different pedigree dogs recognised by breeders in the UK, from Affenpinscher to Yorkshire Terrier (there are sadly no dog breeds starting with the letter ‘z’!).

So there’s plenty of thinking to do before you select your family’s latest four-legged addition – whether you want a large dog, family-friendly dog, or an easy to train dog.

Choosing the right breed is absolutely essential – for example opting for a small dog if you don’t have much room at home, or a hypoallergenic dog if you suffer from allergies.

Meanwhile, certain breeds have particular attributes which mean that they need a little extra looking after, including some dogs that are predisposed to putting on weight and becoming unhealthy.

These dogs just don’t know when they are full, so careful portion control, ensuring they aren’t able to steal food, and regular weigh-ins are key to them living long and healthy lives.

Here are the 13 greediest breeds of dog.

1. Labrador Retriever

Shameless food thieves, Lanrador Retrievers will literally eat until they are ill. They actually have a gene that prevents their brain from registering they are full - so it's not their fault they are hungry again 30 seconds after their dinner. 2. Golden Retriever

While not quite a brazen when it comes to stealing food as the Labrador, the Golden Retriever isn't far behind. Their greed can come in handy when training - they will do anything for a treat - but their food intake otherwise needs to be strictly controlled. They also have a habit of getting so hungry that they will eat things that aren't even food - something else to look out for with this adorable breed. | Getty Images

3. Basset Hound

King of the moochers, the Basset Hound will stare mournfully at you until you share your lunch. It's particularly important not to overfeed them though, as weight gain can cause serious joint and back issues. 4. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Small dogs don't burn off calories as quickly as large dogs, so a breed like the Cavalier KIng Charles Spaniel need a substantial amount to exercise to burn off a big meal. They tend to eat their meals very quickly, so it's a good idea to invest in a puzzle bowl to force them to take their time over supper and keep them in tip-top shape. | Canva/Getty Images
