Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has called for immediate amendments to existing laws and regulations to safeguard the dignity of Buddhist monks and ensure the protection of religious attire and traditions.
Premadasa stressed that certain laws, regulations and procedures must be updated to reflect present-day circumstances, particularly in a country where Buddhism is accorded the foremost place under the Constitution.
He made these remarks during a meeting with Most Ven. Omare Kassapa Anunayake Thera, Senior Deputy Prelate of the Sri Rohana Chapter of the Siamopali Maha Nikaya, at the Ilangamgoda Purana Raja Maha Viharaya in Sapugoda, Kamburupitiya.
The Opposition Leader questioned whether the constitutional provision granting Buddhism the foremost place was being properly implemented, stating that recent developments had raised serious concerns regarding the protection of religious dignity.
He emphasised that while Buddhism should receive its constitutionally recognised place, other religions and ethnic communities must also be accorded due respect and recognition.
Premadasa said amendments should be introduced to ensure that the religious attire, traditions and dignity of religious leaders are protected from interference.
He also criticised proposals to appoint committees requiring two weeks to examine the matter, arguing that the necessary information could be gathered within 24 hours to facilitate immediate action.
The Opposition Leader revealed that the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) had already submitted a proposal seeking amendments to the relevant regulations.
He urged the government to avoid unnecessary delays and take prompt decisions rather than prolonging the process through the appointment of committees.
Premadasa further stated that the SJB, as the Opposition, would exert maximum possible pressure to ensure that the necessary legal and regulatory amendments are introduced without further delay. (Newswire)
