Helmets on, T-shirts proudly worn and three generations pedalling side by side: that was the scene in Competa on Sunday, October 11, when the village celebrated the 18th edition of its Dia del Pedal (Pedal Day), a wonderfully cheerful way to spend an autumn morning in the Axarquia.
Shirts, a start line and a shared ride
Riders collected their commemorative T-shirts at 10am at the Mirador de Venta de Palma, where everyone then clipped on their helmets and set off together at 11am. Competa’s town hall organised this fun day out, where they also gave each participant a small card that had to be stamped to qualify for the games and the final prize draw held later in the afternoon.
Cyclists rolled into Parque Arroyo Lara at around 1pm, where water and fresh fruit were ready for those tired legs.
Let the games begin
Organisers planned something exciting for every age group, so nobody was left watching from the sidelines. The first game began at 1.15pm and continued until everyone had had their turn at the fun. Games included The Freezer for children aged three to six, The Handkerchief Game for children aged seven to nine, a classic Tug of War for children aged ten to twelve, and for the big kids a Basketball Knockout for anyone aged 13 and over, including adult family members.
Plenty of cheering followed when the winners of the last three games all took home prizes.
Bikes and gifts for the lucky few
Excitement built as the final draw approached, with bicycles and various other cycling related gifts waiting for the lucky winners. Organisers summed up the spirit of the occasion as “un día para disfrutar en familia, del mayor al pequeño”, which means a day to enjoy as a family, from the eldest to the youngest.
Anyone who fancies this day of fresh air and games should keep an eye out for the next round. To see the full gallery you can visit the Competa Town Hall Facebook pages.
